2 Days in Prague via Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov

After a beautiful morning in Hallstatt, we bid the cozy village farewell to head back to city life in Prague! To get there, we booked a shuttle van, which would take us through the historical town of Cesky Krumluv on the way there. Our first shuttle experience was great, and we were really happy to be able to get a glimpse of the gorgeous Austrian countryside during the ride. We arrived in Cesky Krumlov with enough time to take a stroll around the Old Town, and get in a good meal at a local restaurant.

Before we knew it, it was time to board the second shuttle to Prague. This time, our shuttle van was a little more crowded… and by a little more crowded, we mean a lot more crowded. It was a very full house, and needless to say, after three hours, we were more than happy to bid our fellow shuttle members farewell and say hello to the beautiful city of Prague!

Day 1: Free Walking Tour and Coat Shopping at the Palladium

Free Walking Tour

We arrived at our Airbnb apartment, and hit the hay to rest up for a full day of sightseeing. We woke up, put on our layers, and headed out for a three hour walking tour of the city. Our tour guide led us through several different areas of the city, and told us great stories about Prague’s past, and gave us a little insight on some of the pros and cons to Prague not being part of the monetary EU. For people like us, we loved being able to switch to the Czech Korna – everything was much more affordable for us, compared to the countries where the Euro was used.

Palladium

After our tour, Desta took Dermot on another tour – of Prague’s Palladium, a large shopping centre in the middle of the city. Dermot stood by her side as she laboured through the thought of purchasing a warmer coat for the chillier weather. After several laps around the mall, Desta purchased a fine black coat that would help her through the remainder of Europe. Upon leaving the mall, we returned home to a fine “home cooked meal” courtesy of our apartment’s microwave, and washed it down with Prague’s notoriously cheap (and delicious) beer! We have snuck in quite a few low cost meals over the course of our trip in order to balance out the days we decide to splurge on champagne and other fancy things, but this is the first to be documented!

Day 2: Charles Bridge, John Lennon Wall, Lesser Town, Prague Castle, Locale Restaurant, Trdelnik and Astronomical Clock

Charles Bridge, Lesser Town, John Lennon Wall

The next day, Desta happily put on her new winter coat, and was greeted by spring like weather for the rest of the day. Coat unzipped, we traveled across the iconic Charles Bridge to check out the John Lennon Wall located in a part of the city called Lesser Town. The wall was really beautiful, and you could stand there forever reading through the layers of colourful graffiti.

Prague Castle

After the wall, we did what had inadvertently become our favourite activity – we saw something high on a hill, and walked up said hill to check it out. This time, our highly situated landmark was Prague Castle. The views once again did not disappoint.

Locale Restaurant

The climb to the castle definitely helped build our appetites, so we checked out a restaurant close to our Airbnb apartment called Locale for a late lunch. They served up some delicious authentic Czech dishes – the ultimate comfort food after a long day of walking. Desta ordered meatloaf and Dermot ordered the beef goulash, both with potato dumplings.

Trdelnik

The day wasn’t over yet! We decided we wanted try Prague’s famous traditional sweet street food, Trdelnik. Unfortunately, Desta had to sit this one out because one of the main ingredients in this sweet pastry is walnuts!

Astronomical Clock

We decided that since this was our last night in Prague, we would hang out in Prague’s Old Town Square to watch the astronomical clock go off, and see the square from a night time perspective. The clock struck the hour, and we said goodnight to the beautiful Old Town and headed back to our apartment to rest up for the travel day that lay ahead. We were definitely sad that our time in beautiful Prague was coming to an end, but excited about our next adventure too. Berlin, here we come!
