Celtic FC Game and the Gannet Restaurant in Glasgow

After several weeks of travelling around Europe now, it was time to return to the very first European city we visited together – Glasgow! When planning our trip, we realized that the amount of luggage we needed for over a year abroad in Australia would not make for a happy European backpacking experience. So, we decided that while visiting Desta’s sister, Honor, in Glasgow, we would leave some bags with her to hold for safe keeping while we did the backpacker thing, and return to Glasgow nearing the end of our trip for another visit, and to pick them back up.

Our idea for a second visit to Glasgow worked out perfectly, as this gave us an excuse to come back to the city, and do even more fun activities with Honor.

We arrived in the evening, and Honor welcomed us back to our home away from home. We spent the night catching her up on what we had been up to since we last saw her in September, and then it was off to bed to get a good night’s rest, because tomorrow, we would be off to the football (soccer) game!

Celtic FC Game

The next morning we woke up, and donned our green clothes to get into the Celtics spirit. The game was at noon, so after breakfast, we were right on our way!

Celtic were playing Aberdeen, so it made for a great matchup – first place vs second place in the Scottish League! The game was so fun much to watch, and we happened to be sitting in the perfect location, close to one of the larger Celtics supporters sections, so we got to hear all the crazy songs (and strongly opinionated commentary) they belted out! Celtics won, 3-1, so everyone was in great spirits!

West Brewery and Street Food Festival

After the game we walked to West Brewery. The brewery was in a gorgeous historic building and the beer was also amazing. We must have been really enjoying the mild weather outside with our beers because before we knew it, it was already dinner time! At that point, we decided it was time to say good bye to the brewery, and switch the scenery for a local street food festival. At the festival, we jumped on the chance to try a Scottish Egg which was pretty delicious!

Birthday Yoga in Glasgow City Centre

The next morning, it was Desta’s birthday! So Dermot woke Desta up to a wonderful birthday gift (a beautiful pair of earrings), and then we headed into the city for Starbucks and a yoga class. A perfect day in Desta’s eyes.

Birthday Dinner at The Gannet, Glasgow

That evening, Honor generously planned a three course, champagne birthday dinner for Desta at a nice restaurant that served modern Scottish cuisine called The Gannet. This meal really ramped up our culinary tastebuds (especially after a month of eating continental breakfast leftovers)! Who knew lamb sweetbread was not a delicous pastry, but instead a lamb’s thyroid? Not us. The food, atmosphere, and the champagne was phenomenal, but the company was of course the highlight for Desta.

After dinner, we headed to a local bar with live music for one more drink, then it was time to head back home to pack for what would be our final European destination and departure city for Australia, Amsterdam!
